I am a caregiver for my husband. He has aphasia and it is severe. He can’t understand but a word here or there. He had strokes 6 years ago. It has been a long 6 years. I have so much to say but am new to this forum so not sure how long this should be. I am interested in other caregivers and how you handle your life. Mark is abusive verbally if he doesn’t get his way. Anybody else?

Hi Carolyn – I can imagine this would be extremely difficult. The work of caregivers is so undervalued, and this is a safe space to share your experience. What are some things you like to do to take care of yourself, when you have the time?

I don’t really do too much for myself. I am at a point where I will be stepping away from the house to go to a friend’s or to my daughter’s. I feel guilty at times for wanting to leave but a person can only take so much. Are you a caregiver? Mark has global aphasia.

So sorry for the delay in responding Carolyn! I actually work with Lingraphica and previously worked in a rehab house for folks with brain injuries, some of whom had aphasia and were also verbally aggressive. It is definitely important to step away sometimes for your own mental health.
